When Mick Jones of The Clash penned the group’s classic rockabilly stomper ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go?’ he certainly wasn’t thinking of the world of work. But it’s a question that’s at the forefront of the minds of many employees, at least according to the latest CIPD survey on recruitment, retention and turnover. The survey, which relates to the 2006 calendar year, shows that staff turnover rates remain stubbornly high across a number of sectors, and the number of employers finding it hard to retain staff has increased substantially (from 69 to 78 per cent). Meanwhile, although there has been a fall in the number of vacancies reported, a high proportion of employers are still experiencing recruitment difficulties.
