Pay and Conditions in Engineering 2007/08

The latest annual report provides you with a detailed picture about pay and benefits across the engineering sector and in other parts of manufacturing where engineering workers are employed. It draws on information from 55 organisations employing over 207,000 staff, and will enable you to benchmark your pay rates and benefits with other comparable organisations.

The full report condenses all the information IDS has accumulated on more than 170 company level pay settlements in engineering over the past year. It also analyses current pay levels for all the main job categories of manual workers and white-collar staff, looks at pay progression arrangements and examines the range of different approaches to pay benchmarking adopted at company level. It also outlines all of the findings on the standard terms and conditions in relation to hours and holidays, bonus pay, premium rates and pensions.

The report includes an in-depth analysis of specific sectors within the engineering industry, which are:

  • Construction industry
  • Motor industry
  • Electricity, gas and water industries
  • Shipbuilding
  • Food industry
  • Vehicle repair industry
  • Public sector

The findings of this authoritive report are based on the responses to a detailed questionnaire sent to engineering companies in June 2007. As well as asking for information on current rates of pay for both manual workers and white-collar grades, companies were also asked a range of other questions on such issues as pay progression arrangements and pay benchmarking. The survey also gathered details of standard terms and conditions such as hours and holidays, bonus pay, premium rates and pensions.

In addition to these questionnaire responses, we have included equivalent information accumulated by IDS over the 12 months from August 2006 to July 2007 from our regular monitoring of pay and conditions developments in the engineering industry. Together these sources provide a wide-ranging coverage of pay and conditions in engineering in the UK.
