Pay deals in the utilities

Skills shortages, profitability and inflation drive up pay deals

In this update, we examine the outcome of pay reviews in the electricity, gas and water industries in the past year and look at examples of current rates paid in key roles such as customer service adviser, multi-skilled craft worker, service engineer and second engineer. This analysis is based on information from a total of 53 settlements in the energy and water sector with 2007 pay review dates. A further 18 are new agreements or the later stages of long-term deals which are effective in 2008. We calculate a median level of settlement of 4.36 per cent for last year and 4.56 per cent for 2008 agreements, where the outcome is known – just over half of these increases await RPI data.
