Company Car Policies 2007/08

Company car policies are becoming more diverse with a growing number of influences impacting on fleet strategy. While some companies are moving away from providing cars directly by introducing employee car ownership plans (ECOPs) or offering cash allowances, others are showing a greater commitment to company-provided cars in preparation for forthcoming corporate manslaughter legislation. Meanwhile, some employers are enhancing the flexibility associated with their schemes, while others are reining it in. This complex picture is a reflection of the current pressures placed on fleet strategy and, as a result, a growing number of companies are reviewing their current arrangements.

To aid in this process, Company Car Policies 2007/08 brings you a practical analysis of company car policies operated by 28 named employers in the UK, enabling you to assess how your own policies compare.

Company Car Policies 2007/08 provides an overview of the fleet arrangements in a broad range of organisations including leading high street banks such as Barclays and HSBC, manufacturers like Unilever and Pepsico, retail chains as diverse as Somerfield and Next and business and major service organisations including PricewaterhouseCoopers and Royal Mail.

The number of employees eligible for vehicles are equally varied, ranging from as many as 8,800 at Barclays to as few as 16 at chemical company CP Kelco.

The report analyses key issues around company cars including:

  • methods of fleet acquisition, the rise of contract hire and moves towards personal contract plans
  • eligibility and allocation policies, including issues such as contributions towards private use
  • cash alternatives and policies enabling individuals to trade up or down
  • issues surrounding insurance and fuel allowances
  • health and safety aspects of company car division
  • appendices provide information on HMRC and AA fuel rates

The case studies of policies in 28 named organisations cover the spectrum of practice. These include organisations that have bought out all company cars as well as those with a range of policies on individual choice and flexible options.

The 137-page research report provides an essential ‘real world’ perspective on these complex, sensitive issues.
