Extract from IDS Executive Compensation Review 313 IT managers Computer networks, intranets, extranets and business software are central to the way modern organisations work. When they go wrong, however, firms can lose business and those who ensure IT systems continue to function are vital, none more so than those who manage them. Drawing on the views of recruitment specialists and our own pay analysis, this article looks at the job market for IT managers. There are still too many IT managers chasing too few jobs despite evidence that the IT market is picking up and businesses are looking to reorganise and improve their IT systems. This is the view of recruitment consultants working in the field, who add that the current competitive candidate-led job market is in sharp contrast to the aggressive recruitment drives of 1999 and 2000. This article includes a table providing remuneration analysis of recent advertised IT management positions as well as a detailed table showing advertised starting rates in named organisations.
