While the debate continues over bankers’ bonuses and non-executive directors’ fat-cat fees, our latest research finds that managers and professional pay awards are already being affected by the recession. This month we have analysed over 190 pay awards across four managerial groups in both the private and public/not-for-profit sectors. And the findings show that concerns about the economy are at the forefront of employers’ minds with salary increases running at markedly low levels and pay freezes significantly up.

The latest IDS surveys have found how the graduate recruitment market paints a mixed picture, with some organisations holding back on recruitment numbers and 2009 starting salaries, while others are keen to keep the talent flowing. A similar story is found in this month’s job market. In retail, the signs are that while supermarkets, budget retail stores and luxury goods retailers are continuing with recruitment plans, the rest of the high street is not doing as well.
